Duck Hunt
Duck Hunt has been a staple videogame for generations, developed in the s the semi-shooter semi-sports game was a hit. It’s as simple as it sounds you’re hunting for Ducks with a dog companion picking up ducks as you go. As you progress in the game the difficulty will increase, meaning you will be unable to miss more and more shots. This game has been widely popularized by Nintendo and a staple classic video game.
Gameplay
The point of the game is very simple, you have 3 shots or less to shoot down ducks for your companion to catch them. This is repeated over and over until the level increases which increases the speed of the birds and the patterns in which they fly. In Duck Hunt, there are 3 variations to choose from, A which launches one bird at a time, B which launches two birds at the same time, and C where ducks are replaced with clay pigeons and your dog is removed. Early variations of Duck Hunt have the controls based on a standard NES controller with the NES zapper type controller. However, with the Wii, the controller is supported by the Wii remote and it’s extensions. What’s different from the Wii and the NES is that the Wii enables you to have a crosshair on screen, this can be disabled however to increase the difficulty.
Graphics
The graphics for a game developed in the s are what they are, they use a simple color palette and simple 8-bit style graphics. For its time it was very entertaining and the graphics were standard for games developed at the time.
Game Comparisons
This game could be compared to the popular video game Wild Gunman, where one has to outshoot another player with a similar device as the zapper. Modern games such as Switch could be compared to Duck Hunt and Wild Gunman as both have a revolver-like reaction time shooting game. Another similar game to Duck Hunt is Hogan’s Alley where one has to shoot enemies and avoid civilians, similar to the shooting mechanic of Duck Hunt. While Duck Hunt isn’t a pure shooter, it was still one of the first games that introduced gunplay into the gaming world. Even though it is far from the pure shooters of today’s standard it was a pioneer in controls and gameplay.
Conclusion
Duck Hunt will always be a staple as a Nintendo game. Individuals still play the game to this day, just getting a remastered version on the Wii just shows the longevity and popularity of the game. Duck Hunt is a timeless game that is labeled as one of the all-time greats.
